St Martin’s Centre provides specialist further education, life skills courses and residential services for young adults (19 – 25) with physical disabilities, sensory, learning and communication difficulties and complex health needs. We are a small forward-looking college based in the centre of Stroud with links to our local FE college and other local provision.
We offer young adults the opportunity to develop the skills needed to enjoy adulthood with as much independence as possible. We want them to feel valued and to grow in their ability to see themselves as an essential part of the community.
Care, therapy and education are all delivered holistically to our students. Each student will have an opportunity to be involved in creating their own personalised pathway which will encompass their own needs, interests and aspirations. It is the next step to empower them to develop their own sense of independence and allow them to flourish.
Our students will realise their potential as they have opportunities to meet new challenges and continue to achieve in all areas of the curriculum. Each student’s personalised curriculum and learning plan blends therapy, education and care and will include functional skills (numeracy, literacy and ICT), work-related learning, independent living skills, personal development, communication and physical well-being as well as a variety of different courses including science, creativity, drama and technology. There is a strong emphasis on equality and diversity throughout our curriculum and all staff work together to give our students the best opportunities to grow and develop. Students with profound and multiple learning difficulties follow a developmental sensory curriculum which includes sensory diets and integration strategies. A ‘total communication’ approach (which shifts the focus away from a reliance on spoken and written communication to a culture where gestures, body language, signs, symbols, photographs, objects of reference and electronic aids are used in a consistent manner to support speech or as an alternative to speech) is employed across college.
The outcomes for students and their future is a key area of discussion right from the beginning of their course and students have regular sessions with their mentor to help them think about their next step in a meaningful way.
We believe in education without barriers and that every individual should be given the opportunities to be inspired, to make choices relevant to them, to feel valued, to develop their own sense of independence and to be supported to achieve their goals and develop to their full potential in a positive environment. We want our students to be able to offer friendship, encouragement, care and love to one another and to gain the confidence to take the next step on their life journey.
St Rose’s aims to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that offers stimulating opportunities appropriate to the needs of our students.
A team of experienced therapists are employed directly by the school to work alongside education and care staff. Collaborative therapy and sharing that knowledge is integral to the work of our school.
When a child or young person is happy, they have the best chance of progressing and achieving their goals. Ensuring that your child’s emotional needs are met is as important as their physical requirements.
